The American Civil War

Between 1861 and 1865, the clash of the greatest armies the Western hemisphere had ever seen turned small towns, little-known streams, and obscure meadows in the American countryside into names we will always remember. In those great battles, those streams ran red with blood - and the United States was truly born.

If you've ever wanted to understand the Civil War, this series of 48 startlingly evocative lectures by a leading Civil War historian can serve as both an ideal single course or a solid starting point for further exploration - a richly detailed examination of how this great conflict affected every person in America. For you'll gain not only a deep knowledge of what happened, but new insights into why.

You'll learn how both sides' armies were recruited, equipped, and trained, and about the hard lot of those they took prisoner. You'll hear how soldiers on each of those sides dealt with the rigors of camp life, campaigns, and the terror of combat. And you'll understand how slaves and their falling masters responded to the advancing war, as well as the desperate price paid by the families so many left behind.

Though this series of lectures goes far beyond a simple examination of battles and generals, it also offers detailed analyses of the strategic and tactical dimensions of the Civil War's most important campaigns. At the same time, it never forgets that the conflict involved far more than pins on a map - and indeed claimed a greater cost in human lives than all other American wars combined.

We bought this lecture series upon the recommendation of a friend, another avid Historian. So glad that we did. Mr. Gallagher has a real gift for bringing the audience into the stories he tells. In addition, he describes the Civil War through eyes that one usually does not experience in typical discussions. He not only explains the battles and the politics of the war, he expands to include how the civilians at home coped, the medical and logistics issues, international involvement and deal-making, and how aftermath of battles impacted Reconstruction. We began listening to the lectures during a road trip. We enjoyed these so much that we planned our daily itineraries around them, hoping to avoid stopping before a lecture was over.

excellent audiobook of the civil war and as a long time student I learned even more about this great subject

Professor Gary Gallagher does an excellent job at giving a 10,000 foot survey of the Civil War. He starts with the stresses on the nation that brought about the war, the events that led up to separation and war, the conduct of the campaigns and battles, and ends up with a brief discussion of the impact the war had on the United States for the fifty years or so after its conclusion. Intermixed with all of this, he discusses the societies of the North and South, their comparative strengths and weaknesses, and the war's impact on groups such as women, immigrants, and African-Americans.While the political and cultural aspects of the war are still hotly debated, Professor Gallagher does an excellent job at giving an even-handed narrative. Neither side was as heroic and virtuous as some would have us believe, but neither were they complete villains.  This is a great survey course that should direct you to more in-depth discussions of the various subjects that the Civil War entails. Unfortunately, if Professor Gallagher dove as deeply as I would have liked in certain places, his course would have stretched for months instead of days. Take The American Civil War as a good introduction for those who are just learning and a good refresher for those more familiar with the subject.

If it is possible to teach the American Civil War in forty-eight lectures of thirty minutes each, then Professor Gary Gallagher has done just that with his American Civil War audio course from The Great Courses. While most of the class focuses on battles and leaders, the course also looks at politics, economics, finance, supply, the naval war, the river war, diplomacy, the home front, the Emancipation Proclamation, prisoners of war, women, and African-Americans and their relationship to the Civil War. Professor Gallagher quotes quite frequently from diaries, letters, and memoirs during the course of the lectures. I especially enjoyed the lessons on the advantages and disadvantages of North and South before the war, John Wilkes Booth and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the Myth of the Lost Cause. I also liked how the course presents the background and personalities of the numerous political and military leaders of the conflict. If you are a busy teacher (as I am) and do not have time to read the large number of books on the Civil War, this course is an excellent substitute and will provide a concise yet informative introduction to one of the most important events in American history.

Wide ranging discussion of many aspects of the Civil War. Professor Gallagher covers details missing in other treatments. This should be offered to all high school history teachers by their schools and/or school districts.

I would give this zero stars if I could. Took it on a long car trip and NONE of the discs played. To make my happiness complete, by the time I got home the "return window" was closed. I am livid.

solid educational content - professor is organized and passionate about the subject matter. overall good for falling asleep, but there’s some inexplicable and jarring music and clapping at the start of each lecture that can wake you up.

This audio book about the civil was is top notch. Having listened to Shelby Foote, James McPherson and also I can honestly say that Professor Gallagher does an excellent job and the audiobook kept me intrigued throughout!
